Affiche Roland Garros 2014

Roland Garros in Paris for Tennis' lovers.

The “open” tournament of the Large Slam is regarded as the greatest tournament in the world on beaten ground. Each year makes it possible to discover new talents or to confirm an uncontested reputation. But before Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, Gustavo Kuerten, Rafael Nadal… that it occurred and why this name of Roland Garros.

It was 101 years ago, the aviator Roland Garros was the first to carry out the crossing of the Mediterranean in the plane, without stopover. He was Holder of 3 world records of altitude and took part in the first air military operation of the history. On a purely posthumous basis, his best friend Émile Lesieur will give his name to International France of Tennis.

The first edition of the Tournament took place in 1891, booked only to the players men registered in French clubs, it was held on the courts of the French Stadium. Six years later, the women had, in their turn, their competition. It is only in 1925 that the tournament opened to the best foreign players.

In 1928 the Stage Roland Garros was built.

A stagium for the Musketeers

The event which was going to upset French tennis took place in 1927. Jacques “Toto” Brugnon, Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet and René Lacoste gained the Coupe Davis over the American ground. The French Federation decided to build a stage new bright burning coal: Roland Garros! and “the Musketeers at the time of the international ones of 1928 preserved the “money salad bowl until 1933”.

The competitions were cancelled between 1940 and 1945 because of the Second World War. The test took little by little its rise as tennis developed. A new era began in 1968: the International ones of France became the first “open” tournament of the Large Slam.
